Director's Statement: I filmed the process of my village repainting Mao Zedong’s portrait and realized that I didn’t understand my villagers, nor did I truly understand Mao Zedong. Born in 1997, I grew up sandwiched between intense political education and more liberated life choices. The content I memorized for exams and my daily life and inner world were two completely separate realms. Facing the slowly reappearing image on the wall, I saw a side of the villagers that was both familiar and unfamiliar, and for the first time, I felt the necessity of gazing at this figure in the portrait. Through him, I saw the people of Huangbotan, most of whom came from Mao-era China, having endured numerous rounds of official indoctrination, infiltration of unofficial histories, which shaped their experiences of life. Now, they live alongside me under a resurrected portrait of Mao Zedong. I want to understand their spiritual world.​
